The RN Extended BSN will function as an Extended Research Care Coordinator who is accountable for the coordination and delivery of nursing care for patients receiving treatment directed by a clinical trial. The role includes assisting with screening patients to clinical trials, direct patient care, collection of protocol directed specimens and data, research participant/family education in clinical and research settings. The RN is responsible for managing and/or participating in all phases of the research process. The RN participates in designing, organizing, and monitoring protocols. The RN assesses research participants, investigates abnormal patterns of adverse events and laboratory results, and reports appropriately. The RN will work closely with providers on day of visit to provide patient care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across practice settings and across the continuum of care to meet the needs of the patient and family
Graduate of a baccalaureate Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited nursing program. Exceptions to this may be made in the MCHS sites prior to a law change requiring accreditation expected in 2018. If graduated from a nursing program that was not accredited by ACEN, at least one year of RN experience (within the last five years) in an applicable care setting is required. If graduation did not occur within the last two years, one year of RN experience in an applicable care setting or one year of current LPN experience at Mayo Clinic is required.
This position could be a 0.8-1.0 FTE
Preference given to those with a minimum of two years previous RN experience in ambulatory and/or acute care settings.
Oncology or hematology experience preferred, knowledge of research study design, development, disease process, and administration of chemotherapy is preferred. Exhibits excellent written and verbal communication as well as interpersonal skills. Must be able to use critical thinking skills with the ability to adapt to unpredictable situations within the clinical and/or research settings. Must be able to collect and review health data in a comprehensive and systematic format by assessing, observing and evaluating an individual patient/family based on established guidelines and protocols. Able to acquire knowledge and proficiency in multiple computer applications. Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings and on-call.
License or certification
Current RN license by applicable state requirements. Arizona and Florida - Maintains Basic Life Support (BLS) competency. Midwest - Maintains current Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers from one of the following programs: American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Additional specialty certification/training as required by the work area.
Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum pay rate is $32.76 per hour.
Ability to work flexible hours, which may include days, evenings and on-call.
