Summer III Nursing

Summer III Nursing Externship

Accepting applications Oct. 15 through Jan. 15

We invite you to explore the Summer III Nursing Externship, an employment experience for junior nursing students at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester, Minnesota.

The Summer III Nursing Externship offers a learning opportunity during which nursing students participate in direct patient care. The externship is offered annually and begins in June. Each summer, students from across the U.S. take part in the Summer III Nursing Externship.

During this 10-week externship, students have the unique opportunity to work alongside multiple RN preceptors to provide patient care in a team environment.

The Summer III Nursing Externship provides you with the opportunity to work alongside RN preceptors to experience nursing care at Mayo Clinic hospitals in their inpatient work areas.

These patient care areas are located on the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester, Minnesota.

The Summer III Nursing Externship begins with a paid orientation. Orientation is designed to introduce you to Mayo Clinic, your specific work area and the Rochester community. There will be a combination of classroom content, online learning and hands-on training within designated work areas.
Uniform requirements will be communicated before the start of the externship. Summer IIIs are required to purchase uniforms and appropriate footwear.

The Summer III Nursing Externship offers not only an educational work experience, but also opportunities to live, socialize and collaborate with other nursing students from around the country.

Rochester has much to offer — read more about things to do in our area.

The Summer III hourly wage is $17.33 an hour. As part of the externship, participants have access to the Dan Abraham Healthy Living Center for a nominal fee.
Shared housing is available and partially subsidized by Mayo Clinic. When choosing the Mayo housing option, costs are automatically deducted from paychecks. Roommates, who are also enrolled in the externship, are assigned based on identified preferences.
There are several available options for transportation, including:
  • Walking or biking
  • Mayo Clinic Campus shuttle bus

For 2020, Mayo Clinic will offer a housing option for Summer III Nursing Externship participants. 318 Commons is a nine-story coeducational apartment building which houses a total of 237 residents, most of which are typically University of Minnesota Rochester students. The facility offers private bedrooms, a kitchen and washer/dryer within each unit. 318 Commons is located in downtown Rochester, Minnesota; just a few blocks from Mayo Clinic’s downtown campus and in walking distance to many restaurants, attractions, the Rochester YMCA, and the Rochester Civic Center!

You have the opportunity to expand your nursing and critical thinking skills while working alongside multiple RN preceptors. The Minnesota Nurse Practice Act prohibits unlicensed employees from performing duties that require a license, so Summer III externs are not permitted to administer medications or IV therapy during their time in the externship.
Depending on the type of Visa you hold, you may be eligible to participate.  Please reach out to us with questions specific to your eligibility at
Uniforms at Mayo Clinic serve as a means of identification. To create a professional impression of both you and Mayo Clinic, uniforms should be clean, neat, modest and well-fitting. Employees are responsible for the purchase and care of their own uniforms. Details about uniform and dress code requirements will be provided by late March.
Notifications are processed in late February.
If you are selected to participate in the externship, specific information about work area placement will be sent in late March. Mayo Clinic nurses have unparalleled career opportunities in a variety of inpatient and outpatient specialties. Summer IIIs will not be assigned to all of these areas but may have opportunities throughout the program to participate in scheduled observations of these areas.

  • American Heart Association (title: BLS for Healthcare Providers)
  • Red Cross (title: CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers)
